Dignitaries, club members, athletes, and distinguished guests filled the venue as the event unveiled the Anniversary Games Logo, the official Mascot, and featured an exciting exhibition match to open the festivities.
In a statement released by the Head of Media and Publicity, Dr. Princess Kelechi Oghene, she described the occasion as “a celebration of legacy, excellence, and community spirit.”
“This year’s games are not just about sports; they represent the club’s remarkable journey from its colonial-era origins to becoming one of Africa’s most inclusive and respected private clubs,” Dr. Oghene remarked. “We are proud to host events that bring together people of different cultures, generations, and talents under one roof. Established on September 29, 1938, Ikoyi Club 1938 was born from the merger of two colonial-era institutions — the European Club and the Lagos Golf Club. The European Club was located on the site of today’s Ikoyi Hotel (formerly the Ikoyi Government Guest House), while the Lagos Golf Club stood where the Federal Secretariat later emerged, before relocating to its current grounds in 1927.
Though its origins reflected the exclusivity of the colonial era, the club has since transformed into a multiracial, globally respected institution, home to thousands of members from diverse professional and cultural backgrounds. Today, it represents a microcosm of Nigeria’s cosmopolitan identity — a place where tradition meets modernity, and community thrives.
